Video superstars - How to Ace a Skype Interview

By Pie Recruitment

I'm not a big fan but i'm afraid we're all going to have to get used to it.  Video interviews are here and they're getting more and more common.

PIE has found that the amount of interviews with our clients taking place over the internet - be it 1st / 2nd or any further advanced stage - has tripled over the past year.

You either love it or hate it and I'm personally not keen on being faced with my own image in the corner of the screen whilst trying to concentrate on an important meeting, but there can be lots of advantages to having a skype / video interview.

If faced with this prospect, try to welcome the opportunity with open arms. Chances are the reason this is happening is partly because of location, saving you a long journey to the office before discovering exactly how much you like the opportunity on offer.  No more sitting in traffic and sweating about the fact you're running late or not sure you're going to make it without running out of petrol.

Enjoy the fact that you can do this in the comfort of your own home, with your favourite beverage at hand (best leave the alcohol for post interview relaxation) and not being checked out in reception by a small gang of office busy bodies.

Indeed if you have had to make excuses as to your absence from the office, you're not going to bump into anyone from the office wondering what you were doing out and about in your best suit when you were supposed to be sick at home.

Finally, it's likely that it won't be the last time you're asked to do this - so you may as well be ahead of the game and get used to it!

The number of first interviews being conducted via the Skype video chat service has doubled in the past year. No dogs barking in the room next door or cats crawling in front of the screen, and absolutely no inappropriate photos in the background "For clients looking to source candidates from outside their own national territory, online video interviews now account for 70 per cent of all first stage interviews," he said. Facing your potential new employer via a screen in the comfort of your own home does not mean you can be more relaxed about the experience than if you were at their office, however.
