Interview Attire - Tuxedos & Homer Simpson Ties!?

By Pie Recruitment

Trying to pick an outfit for an interview is quite a task. I mean there are some real obvious do's and don't (and trust me, I've heard it all) but each company is different so how do you pick the right ensemble for your interview?

Times have changed since the traditional suit and tie in the office environment, and many businesses now encourage a relaxed, dress down culture (like here at PIE). I think we can all agree there is nothing worse than sitting opposite your interviewer in a three-piece suit whilst they are in jeans and a t-shirt, or likewise the other way around!

So to make sure you get it right I would do your research. Ask your recruiter what the culture is like. They should have a pretty good idea and should have been to their offices. If you're speaking to a company directly, have a look a the website to get a feel for them. Check out their 'about us' or 'careers' page and see if they have a dress code. You may also find some pictures of their staff. If not, the majority of businesses now have a social presence. Check out their pages and what they post as that may also give you an indication of the culture and style of the business.

Whatever you go for make sure you do the following (real examples):

- Make sure your items are clean and ironed... it may seem like an obvious tip, but you'd be amazed at what we've seen.

- Consider the weather when choosing your outfit.

- Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident, i.e. it fits comfortably (you don't want anything ripping as you sit down!), you can move in it and you feel good walking into that interview!

- Dress appropriately - don't go in showing too much flesh, sporting a comedy tie (we all love Homer Simpson, but not on a tie), rocking trainers with a suit or offensive socks, a tux (yes, that really happened)... the list goes on!

Feel free to share any examples you've experienced with us!

Now, go knock em dead!

Picking an outfit for a job interview can be a minefield. You don’t want to overdress or underdress. Stitch Fix’s Layne Cross says in the latest edition of #GetHired that picking the right outfit can convey “your level of interest and sincerity about the prospective job.” She suggests doing your research on the company and aiming slightly higher than the normal dress code. You should pick an outfit that makes you feel confident. Also, the look should be as polished as possible.
