The ultimate hands free experience!

By Shane Coker

Something that’s grabbed my interest lately is driverless cars. And before you say it yes, I have recently watched a movie from 2004 starring a certain fresh prince. But nevertheless, you have to admit chilling on the back seat of your car with a coffee in one hand and your laptop on the centre console scrolling through what amazing automotive career opportunities PIE has on its website, while your car takes care of the driving is pretty cool right?

Well although we're not quite there yet, the technology is advancing at an incredible pace. We already have cars that can park themselves, keep you in your lane and brake for you. But how will the car navigate the unpredictability of people and animals or non-autonomous vehicles? Those concerns will require some serious thought and analysis to solve. I’m also not sure how comfortable I would feel seeing the driver's seat vacant and the steering wheel doing its own thing. That’s going to take some getting used to.

The referenced article talks about Goggo's introduction of autonomous delivery vehicles this year with payloads of 1500kg into their delivery operations in Europe, utilising an autonomous driving system developed by Oxbotica.  Automotive giants the likes of Tesla, BMW and Ford (to name a few) are investing in autonomous technology. Like it or not, autonomous tech will start to shape the future of much of the automotive industry over the coming years.

So, what does the future of driverless cars look like? Well, it's hard to predict but one thing's for certain, this ride is going to be a wild one. Could we be looking at cars that fly or transform into robots? Yes, definitely options ;-) But in the first instance, it will be cars that communicate with each other and traffic signals, using the host of new 5G tech that's coming to market all the time.

And all jokes aside, it's clear that driverless cars have the potential to revolutionize the way we travel. They've got the potential to make our roads safer, reduce traffic congestion, and even do their bit for the planet by cutting emissions. Before we can give them the green light, we'll need to overcome some pretty significant challenges. But one thing's for sure, the future of autonomous vehicles is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to see where the road takes us.

"The automotive world is changing rapidly and so the government is right to embrace the positive changes offered by this new technology and back it by funding research and putting forward legislation. Assisted driving systems, for example, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, are already helping millions of drivers stay safe on the roads." AA president, Edmund King
