Most of us have to commute to work - apart from those lucky ones who “work from home”. Personally, my commute has recently changed and I'm travelling about 40 minutes more per day. It's got me thinking about what is a reasonable commute is to work?
Working in recruitment, one of the most common answers when I ask why someone is looking to leave their current job is the commute.
In this day and age we are more than capable of working remotely so should employers be more understanding and helpful to accommodate the long commuters? Or are we more than happy to do it?
The below article suggests that 3.7 million workers travel for two hours or longer every weekday, so I guess we must be happy to do it. I mean, what else would we moan about at work?
As I mentioned, my daily commute has increased by about 40 minutes a day and whilst I enjoy the radio, it seems every other advert is for the postcode lottery - and it's starting to grate on me, so I want to make better use of the time. I’m sure a lot of people work on their commute, but I'm intrigued to find out other ways that people make good use of the hours they spend making their exciting daily journey. For example, learning Spanish?! Ola! Listening to audiobooks?
So some ideas please people! How long is your daily commute and how do you pass the time?
Spending two hours commuting each day is a reality for many UK workers, says data that suggests Britons are willing to travel further and longer. Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show 3.7 million workers travel for two hours or longer every weekday. Frances O'Grady of the Trades Union Congress, which published the figures, called on employers to do more to prevent "excessive" journeys. The average daily commute lasted 57.1 minutes in 2015, the ONS data showed.
