Single Use Plastic - the phrase on everyone's lips.
The FMCG sector is under extreme scrutiny at the moment in the 'War on Plastic' - and rightly so as they package absolutely everything in unnecessary plastic. However, I have to say there has been a big shift recently in tackling this ongoing issue - although the twitter trolls will tell you otherwise!
For all of you moaners out there, take a look at some of the things grocery retailers and Food Manufacturers are doing to try and tackle the problem:
- Sainsbury's have joined Morrisons by introducing a recycling scheme in selected stores.
- Asda is banning carrier bags on all online orders.
- Co-Op is trialing glass milk bottles in a store in Sheffield with milk brand Our Cow Molly.
- Merlin Entertainments and Coca Cola are once again incentivising people to recycle at selected theme parks by offering 50% off park entry.
- Unilever are rolling out a refill pod for their Cif Power & Shine bottles to save buying a new bottle.
- Higgidy Pies are trialing a paper case for their quiches in selected grocery retailers to replace the current plastic case.
I am only scratching the surface with the above and this took me 5 minutes to research! Don't get me wrong there is absolutely still a long way to go - but surely we are moving in the right direction, are we not?
So, let's do what we can to help instead of picking faults - and who knows it could help your bank balance in the process.
Rant over!
