'Have you tried turning it Off & On?'

By Pie Recruitment

Last night, at around 5 pm, something remarkable happened! We had to actually talk to our families, revert to old-school texting and maybe even read a book - yes, you will have all been affected - FACEBOOK, WHATSAPP & INSTAGRAM WENT DOWN!

I didn't quite know what to do with myself.  At one point I even considered trying to work out my login details to Bebo, MSN & Myspace to keep myself entertained.

The outage sparked panic over at 'The Social Network' but also for many businesses, influencers, and over 2.5 billion people worldwide.

The issue - which is estimated to have cost the company around £58m in revenue and wiped £36b off its value was fixed after around 7 hours to bring us all back in from the darkness. According to reports, Zuckerberg himself could see this affect his own pocket to the tune of £5b - ouch!

The HUGE costs mainly come down to the Ad Revenue that was lost during the outage with the latest figures showing in the last 3 months Facebook makes roughly £20b from this revenue stream alone!

Not only did it hit the pocket of the biggest social networking site in the world but also small businesses that rely on Whatsapp, Facebook & Instagram meaning stores, restaurants, and delivery services were hit hard.

This was one of the biggest blackouts in the history of social media - and although I was kept thoroughly entertained on Twitter with everyone popping fun at the problem - does this prove an issue with just one company dominating the market?

This really does show how much of our life we spend online and how we rely so heavily on it - not only for our own sanity but in order to run our businesses.

How did the outage affect you? Will it have a knock-on effect? Or were you just forced into looking up from your phone for once!

Nearly $50bn (£36.7bn) was wiped off Facebook’s value after its social media platforms went down for several hours due to a "faulty configuration change".  Facebook and Instagram were partially reconnected to users around the world around 10.45pm on Monday, nearly six hours into a global outage. Facebook issued an apology for the outage which impacted the social media giant, along with Instagram and WhatsApp, which Facebook also owns.
