During the weekend: I LOVE THE SNOW!
Spending time with my children, sledging, snowmen, snowball fights, warming stews, cosy fires and family movies.
During the week: I HATE THE BLOODY SNOW!
No childcare, schools closed, freezing offices, meetings cancelled, disrupted work, lack of productivity, clearing windscreens, falling over, traffic, journey times and my special favourite…BMW drivers!
You are probably wondering what all the fuss is about, but we’re based in the (beautiful) Chiltern Hills and believe me…the world literally goes into melt down. And I should know…last week it took me 4 hours to drive 10 miles and not so long ago, I happened to get married on one of the worst snowmageddons this country has ever seen. I was 5 hours late to my own wedding!
But.
Let’s all be sensible. We live in a supposedly modern world and we really should be able to cope with this better. Surely the sensible plan is flexible working, holed up at home with a laptop and a cup of Bovril. Productive working from a brilliant bunch. After all, as an employer the last thing we should do is put our staff at risk unnecessarily.
So on to tomorrow. Apparently, we will be bombarded by a load more of the bloody stuff. But our staff are empowered to make their own decision as to where they will be working and I trust them all to be as productive as they would be if they were in the office.
And if they can squeeze in a bit of sledging as well – fair play to them.
Oh, and if you drive a BMW – do the rest of us a favour and stay off the roads. You are a liability.
(and Mercs!)
It is a good idea for employees to remind themselves of their contract. Some jobs may also have a specific clause written in, or have a collective agreement in place, which means an employer will pay staff who cannot get to work owing to circumstances beyond their control. Some employers might also make discretionary, informal arrangements. For example, they may let employees work from home, or agree that the time can be made up at a later date.
