Who's the Driver? The world of new mobility tech...

By Ollie Church

As technology advances continue to develop and emerge in the Automotive sector, it seems that low-cost mobility providers such as Uber and Jolt are soon going to have more competition. However, these taxis won’t have a driver! Well, that’s not technically true…

Imperium Drive is fronting a prototype driverless taxi that can be driven remotely. This exciting development will be trialed initially in Milton Keynes. Users will be able to hail down a vehicle directly from an app - and that vehicle will be 'driven' by someone who is potentially on the other side of the country - or even in another country - via a remote video feed.

Imperium Drive aims to launch its ride-hailing service later this year under the name Fetch. This project is only going to be viable due to developments in 5G which will no doubt come to define the mobility market in the future.

Let’s face it, these advances are both exciting and scary at the same time. It certainly throws up many questions.

What happens when the car is driven through an area not covered by 4G or 5G? Or the signal is slower than normal? Or God forbid it goes down completely?!

Whatever your thoughts on these emerging technologies, it’s certainly exciting to say the least and will no doubt will set a precedent for future developments.

A connected vehicle technology which could eventually help fleets increase vehicle utilisation and cut costs is set to be put into public use in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, later this year. Imperium Drive’s Fetch project, which is being run as part of the £4.1 million MK:5G initiative, aims to run a remote-operated car-hailing service which will enable users to summon an unmanned vehicle via an app.
