A rolling tyre gathers no moss? Or does it...

By Ollie Church

The innovation in the Automotive world never ceases to amaze me & Goodyear’s newest invention really tops the lot. At the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, the manufacturing company debuted a new type of tyre that aims to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

The concept behind the new tyres, named Oxygene, is rather astounding; it involves inserting living moss within the tyre's sidewalls. The moss not only absorbs moisture from the roads but can also pull carbon dioxide out of the air to fuel the moss’s photosynthesis. And it just so happens that the by-product of photosynthesis is clean oxygen.

The trend moving forward in the automotive world is very clear. If it’s not environmentally friendly, it’s not going to get the backing of the masses…even if it does sound like science fiction!

Goodyear estimates that if all the vehicles in a city the size of Paris, which is home to about 2.5 million vehicles, were fitted with the Oxygene, more than 4,000 tonnes of CO2 would be absorbed and 3,000 tonnes of oxygen released back into the atmosphere annually.
