The BMW Recall: When is it too late to admit you’ve made a mistake?

By Ollie Church

News has finally emerged that BMW is now going to have to recall over 300,000 vehicles. The most shocking part of this debacle is that these vehicles had already been recalled in other countries some years ago.

So why it has taken BMW so long to make this decision?

Their reaction - or lack of it - has received widespread attention because a former British soldier was killed in December 2016 after having swerved and crashed to avoid a stalled BMW on a dark road at night. Accusations are being leveled that they have potentially been covering up the fault on their vehicles since as early as 2011. With a retail industry that is already under duress, incidents like this can put a cloudy outlook on the future.

BMW has confirmed a second recall of thousands of vehicles from UK roads in just over a year, due to problems with the cars' power supply. The German car giant said it had recalled 312,000 vehicles, including BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, the Z4 and its X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and September 2011. BMW had initially recalled 36,410 petrol cars in April 2017 over safety issues. The most recent recall comes after an investigation by the BBC's Watchdog programme. BMW said: "We now recognise that there may have been some cases of similar power supply issues in vehicles not covered by the original recall. "In order to reassure customers with concerns about the safety of their vehicles, we are voluntarily extending the recall.
