Waitrose finds new ways to 'Sparkle'. How long until others follow suit?

By Pie Recruitment

I certainly can't claim any eco-warrior status, but I have to say that I'm becoming ever more conscious of waste pouring into our oceans and rivers. I've refused plastic straws in bars, I don't buy bottled water and recycle as much as I can but that's about the extent of my plastic social consciousness I'm afraid.

I love a bit of sparkly stuff, and there's no better excuse than Christmas to add a bit of glitter to absolutely everything in life. But until now, I'd never even considered the damage it can cause to marine life & god only knows what else...

So, it's great news to hear that Waitrose are eliminating this from their own brand ranges - on top of the great work they're already doing on reducing the impact of plastics on the environment.

Now I don't want to be all bah humbug about it, but I'll be thinking about how much sparkle I buy from now on... Just hurry up and let me know when we've found a twinkly alternative!

Waitrose own-brand cards, wrapping paper, Christmas crackers, gift tags, flowers and plants will either be glitter-free or use an environmentally friendly alternative within the next two years. This is because glitter is made up of small pieces of plastic that can end up in water and never break down. Three-quarters of its own-label cards, wrapping paper, Christmas crackers and gift tags, along with half of its flowers and plants, will be glitter-free by the end of 2018. By next Christmas, all its plants and flowers will follow suit. “Reducing the impact of plastics on the environment is something our customers care passionately about,” said Waitrose head of CSR, health and agriculture Tor Harris. “While it’s important to eliminate the use of glitter, we’ll find other ways to make sure our products sparkle at Christmas and throughout the year.”
