You're not a "ninja" so leave it out...

By Pie Recruitment

Making your profile stand out in a job application process can be a time consuming task.

Whilst wild ideas and innovation are often encouraged when it comes to CV curation, particularly for early career roles, it's important that your professional sales document doesn't fall too far in to the social media language territory, or even in to the obscure.

I see a lot of "Ninjas" in my line of work.

I also see a lot of "Gurus" and "Evangelists" too.

Once upon a time it might have been intriguing, but I'm afraid to say that these days, it's just a bore. I've yet to meet anyone that lives up to these grand, self-served accolades.

There's lots of ways for you to really show off your skills succinctly and make an impact and I think hiring managers would reflect my sentiments that a skilled use of the English language without resorting to over used social terms are going to get you noticed more.

Incorporating key words and using sharp and to-the-point language is a great way of keeping hiring managers reading and can actually lead to them picking up the phone. One way of doing this is by reading through a specific job application and listing the key words used and crafting them into a CV. It’s then a good idea to bin any words that are meaningless and irrelevant to the job application, so hiring managers will read on. Alisha Miranda, Author of the Millennial's Guide to Surviving (and Thriving) Unemployment, shares her top tips on what words should be deleted on a CV. For example, Miranda suggested job hunters should remove all words that are empty descriptors such as ‘ninja’ and ‘maven’. These phrases can often come across quite flippant and shouldn’t be used on a professional document like a CV.
