The "DFT" is doing what it can to spark the industry to meet their commitment for carbon-free transport for Cars and Vans by 2050. They have also touted 2040 as the year to end all sales of petrol and diesel vehicles!
How is this going to happen? They believe that investing £40 million to projects can aide this.
Char.gy has been awarded £2.3m to develop wireless charging solutions for residential streets alongside their already popular lamppost connectors. This is made possible by a process called Induction, a solution very similar to the wireless phone charging that we are seeing more of from market leaders Apple and Samsung. This is a simple modification to the underside of the vehicle and another pad hidden/planted underneath the road surface, and is being trialed in parts of Buckinghamshire and Redbridge London FOR FREE! Urban Foresight has been awarded £3m to develop "pop-up" chargers built into the pavements to encourage buyers that do not have a driveway or off street parking, to purchase EV's.
It's safe to say that the technology has improved the mileage range of vehicles, however, it's now down to the infrastructure of EV Charge Points to meet the standard for all drivers to make this a viable option.
PHEVs sales declined in June by 50.4% in June compared to this time last year where Battery electric vehicles rose by 61.7% signaling that the infrastructure is catching up.
