Who run the world? GIRLS!

By Pie Recruitment

When I was a little girl I always dreamed of being a teacher. I remember sitting down in my room with my Barbie dolls (after painting their nails and cutting their hair of course) and playing classrooms. 20 years later I somehow ended up falling into recruitment, but thanks to Barbie I've lived my dream, even if I was only 5 years old at the time.

This year Barbie celebrated her 60th Birthday. I know, she looks great doesn't she?! And what a great life she's had with over 200 different jobs on her CV ranging from an astronaut to marine biologist, a scuba diver to a vet, a programmer and even an ice-skating coach.

In celebration of the big 6 0, Mattel and Virgin have teamed up to show young girls the bundle of career choices available in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and aviation. Current statistics show that women make up 12 per cent of the UK's engineering workforce, with only 4.3 per cent of pilots being female. Virgin is on a mission to change this.

I can't think of a better way to inspire young girls than through the use of Barbie. This may be my favourite partnership of all time! It's Barbie doing what she does best, showing young girls that they really can be anything they want, and hats off to Virgin for acknowledging we need some more girls in here! The duo have created three unique dolls representing the exciting roles available to women in the industry: an engineer, a pilot and a member of cabin crew. I can't wait to #SEEHERFLY!

What did Barbie inspire you to be?

Did you know that less than 5% of UK pilots are women? At Virgin Atlantic we know that women are underrepresented across a number of careers within aviation. We also know we can’t change this position overnight. We’ve partnered with Barbie ® to inspire the future generation of aviation professionals and get more girls dreaming of taking to the skies in the Captains seat ✈️⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Translated into the social language of emojis, one of the most underused emojis on the keyboard is 👩‍✈️. According to emojistats.com its used far less than it’s male counter part 👨‍✈️. Let’s change that. It’s time to hashtag#SeeHerFly⁣
